First job was to clean up the bottom end and remove the old gasket sealant from the casing. I used brake cleaner and a scotch brite pad, which worked a treat. While the head was off I had a good look around, interestingly I found that the engine was fitted with a counter balancer all the time. The noise and rattling must have been from the old rings letting the pistons rattle and possibly also something to do with the cams. Fingers crossed that the refresh sorts that out.
I next assembled the pistons and fitted the new rings. With the pistons in position that the exhaust side faces you. The rings go in the following order:
First fit the crinkle oil ring with the gap facing you, not overlapped.
Fit the bottom oil ring with the gap to the right.
Next fit the top oil ring with the gap to the left.
Now the 2nd ring (cast ring in black) with the N facing upwards, gap to the front.
Finally the 1st ring with the N facing upwards, gap to the back.
